A friend has asked me a question that what is the best method to analyse the content of mind. This is really an interesting question to discuss about but I want to approach it in a new way. I want to ask that is it possible to analyse the content of mind. Can one analyse one’s mind with all its content? Is it possible or not? Its possibility will lead us to the next step.
If we see the whole process of analysation, we can understand there is not just one entity. There are so many fragmentations of mind, one of them is the self and other is considered as the content. I don’t know am I putting my words in right order to make it easy to understand. Let me make it easier, there is an “analyser” and the other is “analysed”. The analyser analyses the content of mind. So it is easy to understand that the analyser & analysed are two separate entities. Analyser has his own identity. The “I”, self, analyser is a collection of knowledge. Analyser is a collection of all the past memories, ideas, concepts, experiences, knowledge with its own petty miseries and problems. When the analyser looks at the content of mind, it uses it own knowledge to observe the content. Due to its past knowledge, it has its own likes and dislikes. So, the analyser (full of ideas, knowledge, likes & dislikes) looks at the content and observes it in a different way. Is it possible for the analyser to look at the content without any distortion? If we go deeper into this process, we can understand the Self (analyser) is a problem in analysing. It cannot observe the content as it is due to its own knowledge. It is same as I look at someone and due to past experiences; I judge him right or wrong, good or bad, friend or enemy.
Mind is full of content and self analysation is a long process. One has to go step by step to analyse the whole content of mind. Our mind can observe only one content at one time. It is not able to concentrate on all the contents in just one vision. So it becomes really tricky. We observe one thought at a time and there are so many other thoughts which are wandering from here and there and are changing continuously. It is so much difficult to explain. Self analysation is a process, process takes time, mind can observe one thought at a time, mind is not able to concentrate on more than one thought at a time, when mind is observing one thought all other thoughts are changing themselves, all other thoughts are wandering here and there, so the mind ( analyser) is constantly struggling with this situation. Suppose there is big jar full of tiny balls and one has requested me to count the number of balls, and one is continuously juggling the jar whole time. So it becomes impossible to observe all the content because everything is changing continuously and the mind is not able to observe it as a whole.
When we use a method which is a step by step process, we cannot go on next step without being completely assured about the present step. In the case of observation of thoughts it is really an important problem. If you are not completely assured on this step, how can you go on next step? If you will go on without making it correct, it will become absolutely absurd. Thoughts are not dead things, they have movements. They change time by time. How can one observe a thought completely when thought is a living thing? You can make conclusion about a dead thing. You can be assured about the dead things because they are still; they do not change, but how it is possible in the case of thoughts. This is a strange problem.
So there are so many problems in self analysation. Our vital questions are, how can a mind which is full of knowledge observe something as it is? How can a mind which has its own experiences, miseries, concepts, ideas observe the content without any distortion? The analyser himself is a problem in whole process. How can one observe when the content is continuously changing, in movement? How can the observer be completely assured about a thing which is in movement all time, a living thing? These are vital problems but there are so many other problems too, we will discuss about them in future.
